Dieses Buch analysiert die gesellschaftlichen und technologischen Transformationsprozesse in Bhutan vor dem Hintergrund empirischer Forschungen, die zwischen 2002 und 2007 vom Interdisziplinären Forschungsinstitut für Entwicklungszusammenarbeit (IEZ) unter der Leitung des Herausgebers durchgeführt wurden. Der empirische Teil enthält die wesentlichen methodologischen Schritte und Ergebnisse zweier Projekte im Energiebereich – Ofenbau, Strom – und stellt die sozialen, kulturellen und ökonomischen Folgen der Elektrifizierung in vier ländlichen Distrikten detailliert dar. Auf den Mahayana Buddhismus, die Praxis des Feldforschens, die Leistungen der Österreichischen Entwicklungszusammenarbeit in Bhutan und das einzigartige Entwicklungskonzept „Gross National Happiness“ wird ebenso eingegangen wie auf die jüngsten politischen Veränderungen, die aus dem ehemaligen absolutistischen Königreich eine konstitutionelle Monarchie mit freien Wahlen gemacht haben.
